Senior Registrar (27.9.1978-30.10.1979)
Department of Dermatology, University of Göttingen, Germany

In the function of Senior Registrar, Dr. Tsambaos was in charge of one (out of four) inpatient wing (30 beds) and of certain outpatient clinical services. He actively participated in the Residency Education Program of the Department and in the consultative service provided to other Departments. He continued his training in Dermatopathology under the supervision of Professor H. Berger (about 100 skin biopsies daily). Additionally, he trained in Electron Microscopy under the supervision of Professor G. Mahrle.

POST TITLE :
Assistant Professor (Hochschulassistent-C1) (1.11.1979-31.12.1984)
Department of Dermatology, Steglitz Medical Center, Free University of Berlin, Germany

Dr. Tsambaos was in charge of one (out of two) inpatient wing (30 beds) and of certain special outpatient services. He was the main Consultant Dermatologist for the patients of other Departments and he was in charge of the Electron Microscopy Lab. He continued his training in Dermatopathology and actively participated in the Graduate and Residency Education Program. His research activity mainly concerned the synthetic retinoids and their effects on epithelial and non epithelial tissues.

POST TITLE :
Vice Chairman (Leitender Oberarzt) (1.1.1985-30.9.1985)
Department of Dermatology, University of Essen, Germany

In the capacity of Vice Chairman Dr. Tsambaos had to substitute and act on behalf of the Chairman in his absence bearing all rights, authorities, duties and responsibilities entitled onto him. Additionally, he was in charge of the wards (120 beds) and the outpatient Department and participated in the consultative service provided to patients of other Departments, interpreted microscopically 80-100 biopsies daily and actively participated in the education and research program of the Department.

POST TITLE: Professor and Chairman (3.10.1985 –9.6.2015)
Department of Dermatology, Patras University Medical Center, University of Patras, Greece

Dr. Tsambaos was the Founder and the first Chairman of the Department of Dermatology, University of Patras. The outpatient division of the Department handles about 16.000-20.000 outpatient visits per year, whereas the dermatology inpatient care is provided in a 25-bedded ward located on level 4 of the main hospital building serving about 1.500 patients per year.

Apart from the corresponding clinical and laboratory units, Dr. Tsambaos has founded the National Reference Center for Occupational Dermatoses and the National Reference Center for Sexually Transmitted Diseases. He has acquired many years of experience in the clinical and dermatopathologic diagnosis and the management of severe and recalcitrant skin disorders and of sexually transmitted diseases.

In collaboration with the research group of the Department of Medical Physics, he developed a method for the quantitative determination of the viscous and elastic parameters of human hair shaft. It was shown that the pattern of these parameters is of particular importance in the diagnosis of hair disorders and in the assessment of their therapeutic response.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES (D. Tsambaos)

  1. Departments of Dermatology, Universities of Göttingen, Berlin and Essen (Germany):
He actively participated in the corresponding Graduate and Dermatology Residency Education Program.
  2. Department of Dermatology University of Patras (Greece): As Director of the Dermatology Graduate, Postgraduate and Residency Education Program Committee, he organized and supervised the program of lectures, conferences, grand rounds, clinical visits, journal club and bed-side teaching and actively participated in these activities.

    stic parameters of human hair

SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTION TO DERMATOLOGY

1. Prof. Tsambaos together with Prof. Goerz were the first to find out that UV-irradiation of skin is capable of modulating the activities of cytochrome P450 isoenzyme in the liver.
2. Prof. Tsambaos together with Prof. Berger were the first to report that UV-A radiation exerts distinct carcinogenic effects on the skin.
3. Prof. Tsambaos together with Prof. Orfanos introduced for the first time arotinoid ethylester, a representative of the 3rd retinoid generation, in the systemic treatment of severe and recalcitrant psoriasis.
4. Prof. Tsambaos together with Prof. Goos and Dr. Eichelberg were the first to report the impressive therapeutic effects of recombinant interferon alpha in the treatment of Behcet’s disease.
5. Prof. Tsambaos and his research group at the University of Patras were the first to:
5.1. Introduce oral isotretinoin monotherapy in the treatment of Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis.
5.2. Detect the effects of oral thalidomide on porphyrin metabolism in the liver and to report that this compound is capable of inducing an impressive and rapid clinical and biochemical remission in male patients with porphyria cutanea tarda.
5.3. Find out that topical application of imiquimod, a TLR 7/8 ago-nist, is capable of inducing a systemic immunomodulation. Moreover, they were the first to report the complete remission of recurrent herpes labialis subsequent to the topical application of imiquimod to distant normal skin.
5.4. Introduce the combined topical application of anthralin and calcipotriol to the lesions of chronic plaque psoriasis, that rapidly leads to a complete and long term remission of this disorder.
5.5. Find out that seborrheic keratoses are not mere manifestations of cutaneous aging, but skin infections due to the human papilloma viruses (HPV).
